IT BEGINS WITH THE SOIL

two-dot-d

Our soil is dying. It's an uncomfortable truth, one we don't speak about enough, but it's happening, and the consequences for us and our children are dire.

In our rush to grow crops quickly and cheaply, we've adopted farming methods that have degraded our farmlands, and stripped them of much of their nutritional value.

Here are some statistics we should all be aware of:

It takes hundreds, even thousands, of years to form an inch of nutrient rich topsoil.

95% of per capita calorie consumption worldwide comes from crops that grow directly in the soil or from food sources that indirectly rely on it.

Approximately one half of the Earth's agricultural soils are now degraded

A teaspoon of healthy soil has up to 1 billion different helpful bacteria from 15,000 species. One teaspoon of soil treated with chemicals may carry as few as 100 helpful bacteria.

The nutritional values of many fruits and vegetables have dropped dramatically since 1950. A comprehensive 2004 US study found important nutrients in some garden crops were up to 38% lower than 50 years previously (and things have only gotten worse since then!).

2 billion people globally are now suffering nutritional deficiencies.

Devastating, right?Ā

Thankfully, all is not lost... yet. At The Organic Skin Co., we believe itā€™s possible to help regenerate our farmlands by adopting organic farming practices, including crop rotations. If we do, we can replenish our soil, clean our waterways, and support vital ecosystems.

THAT'S WHY, AT THE ORGANIC SKIN CO., EVERYTHING BEGINS FOR US WITH OUR SUPPORT FOR ORGANIC FARMING.

Minimizing Waste

two-dot-w

ALONGSIDE OUR COMMITMENT TO ORGANIC FARMING AND REPLENISHING THE SOIL, WE ALSO WANT TO PLAY OUR PART IN HELPING MINIMIZE WASTE.

two-dot-d

It almost goes without saying that the beauty industry (along with numerous others!) needs to do more to minimize waste. Did you know, for example, that 120 billion units of beauty packaging are created annually, a lot of it plastic? That's a lot of packaging. To put it into perspective, if you were to stack all those packages one beside the other and walk past them, you'd end up traveling the same distance as it would take to circle the Earth 270 times!

Add in the fact that 18 million acres of forest are lost to the beauty industry annually, that there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050, that most plastics take 400 years to break down, and it's clear we have a problem.

As a whole, the beauty industry is beginning to take steps in the right direction, but we do need to get over our dependence on plastic and extraneous packaging and embrace circular sustainability. Our very future and the long-term viability of our planet depends upon it.

Here are the steps weā€™ve taken to minimize our use of plastic and excess waste...

COMPOSTABLE, ECO-PULP OUTER PACKAGING - WE'RE BREAKING THE MOLD!

We're immensely proud to be leading the way with our molded, eco-pulp, sustainable packaging, which is available with every D2C purchase.

WHEN IT COMES TO SUSTAINABILITY, THIS PACKAGING HAS SEVERAL UNIQUE ADVANTAGES OVER CONVENTIONAL BEAUTY PACKAGING. IT IS:

two-dot-d

Recyclable and compostable within 90 days.

Made from plentiful, easily collected materials which are renewable and wholly natural (sugarcane bagasse, wood pulp, wheat straw pulp, wastepaper, and other eco-natural plant fibres).

Manufactured without harmful gases, effluent liquor, or waste residue.

Lightweight, strong, and flexible, helping to protect the product.

PCR ALUMINUM TUBES - DESIGNED FOR CIRCULARITY

We use high quality, PCR aluminum tubes throughout our skincare and hybrid makeup lines.

REPRESENTING THE LATEST IN ECO-INNOVATION, THESE TUBES ARE:

two-dot-d

95% PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled Aluminum) meaning they're made from aluminum that was destined for disposal if it hadn't been diverted from the waste cycle.

5% PIR(Post-Industrial Recycled Materials) meaning they're made from materials re-used within a company's manufacturing process

100% recycled and recyclable

THEY ALSO COME WITH THE FOLLOWING PERFORMANCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL ADVANTAGES. ALUMINUM TUBES:

two-dot-d

Retain all their outstanding properties, no matter how many times they're recycled.

Protect contents from light, air, and temperature fluctuations, helping to prevent contamination and preserve the integrity of the product.

Have a small carbon footprint, with significantly less emissions at point of manufacture than conventional plastic tubes and containers.

Have a longer shelf life.

Can be almost fully emptied, meaning little to no waste (especially when you use our bamboo keys to squeeze every last drop of organic goodness from the tube!).

PLUS, IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT COUNT

When it comes to minimizing waste, it's often the little things that are overlooked, like the toxic glue that binds a plastic cap to an outer, seemingly environmentally friendly lid. We've worked hard to overcome these small things to help make our packaging as environmentally friendly as we possibly can.

IN ADDITION TO OUR INNOVATIVE ECO-PULP OUTER-PACKAGING AND ALUMINUM TUBES, WE ALSO USE THE FOLLOWING IN OUR PACKAGING, TO HELP MINIMIZE OUR PLASTIC FOOTPRINT.

Glass containers.

Bamboo caps and tube keys.

Labels printed with vegetable ink.

Compostable mailer bags.

CERTIFICATIONS

two-dot-w

For us, certifications are an important part of our commitment to regenerative beauty and creating products you can trust to do the right thing by you and our planet.

IMPORTANT CERTIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

two-dot-d

Up to mid-2024, all of our products were certified as ā€˜Made with Organicsā€™ by New Zealandā€™s leading certification agency, BioGro. This certification, along with our new partnership with NSF, is important to us, as it helps you know that - when you use our products - you're not only applying nutrient-rich, premium organic ingredients to your skin, you're also playing your part in helping regenerate our precious soil.

BioGro is a highly respected organic Certifications Agency which, like us, is based in New Zealand. The good folks who work there set high standards and we work hard not only to meet them, but surpass them. This means our supply chains and ingredients are stringently vetted, to ensure everything is ethically sourced, GMO-free, and free of synthetic chemicals, herbicides, and animal by-products.

All our products are certified Vegan by the UK Vegan society. You don't want to make them part of your diet, but we guarantee that your skin will eat them up! Oh, and by the way, our products are gluten free too.

COMPLETING THE CIRCLE

Caring for our planet is about more than minimizing waste and protecting our soil, no matter how important those things are. It's also about best practice when it comes to supply chains, manufacturing, and giving back in a meaningful way.

FOR US, THE FOLLOWING THINGS ARE EVERY BIT AS IMPORTANT AS OUR COMMITMENT TO ORGANIC FARMING AND SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING THAT HELPS MINIMIZE WASTE AND OVER-USE OF PLASTIC.

two-dot-d

We use supercritical CO2 extracts in all our products. CO2 is the only extraction agent that's certified organic; it's also a no-waste extraction methodology with zero run-off, unlike conventional extraction technologies
